Church of England announces campaign to combat anti-gay bullying

LONDON ? The Archbishop of Canterbury has announced a campaign to stamp out anti-gay bullying in Church of England schools, acknowledging that attitudes toward sexuality have changed.

Right Rev. Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury

Archbishop Justin Welby, spiritual leader of the world?s Anglican Communion, stressed that the Church of England wasn?t changing its teaching on gay relationships, but that it would be ?absurd and impossible? to ignore shifting cultural attitudes.

He told the opening of the General Synod of the Church of England that ?the majority of the population rightly detests homophobic behavior,? adding that ?sometimes they look at us and see what they don?t like.?

He said the church must ?demonstrate a profound commitment? to stereotyping, announcing that the Church of England is developing a program for use in its schools to stamp out anti-gay bullying.

Twitter outlines new model for targeted ads

We'll admit that we haven't been particularly impressed with the sponsored tweets we've been getting courtesy of Twitter's current ad model. To address the issue, the service is toying around with a more targeted program, offering up ads to users from those businesses and brands they've shown an interest in. Rather than simply mining mentions on the service, the new model utilizes browser cookie IDs and scrambled email addresses, so those who've actually visited that site are more likely to get adverts from it. Not interested in taking part? You can uncheck the box next to Promoted content in your settings to opt out.

Samsung introduces 'HomeSync Lite' backup and streaming software

'Cloud' storage and sync from your existing PC without a separate hardware purchase

Samsung is introducing new PC software to turn your home computer into a cloud backup location for all of your other Samsung devices. Similarly to its stand-alone hardware backup device -- the Samsung HomeSync -- this new HomeSync Lite software will install on your home PC and provide a central location for multimedia storage without any additional fees or services. The basic premise is that once you have the software installed and all of your Samsung devices linked up with a Samsung Account, you'll be able to backup and access the same content across all phones, tablets and cameras seamlessly. Content stored on the PC will be available on other devices, streaming directly between the two without an additional service.

Now naturally this will only work with Samsung's own mobile devices -- the promo video shows tablets, phones and smart cameras -- but for those who have their whole world rooted in the one manufacturer this can be a compelling setup. As the amount of media stored piles up, the software also interfaces with external drives to expand storage. HomeSync Lite supports up to 5 users accounts per PC and up to 6 devices per user account, making this a great option for a family or shared home PC setup.

South Africa: Apartheid-era leader falls ill

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? F.W. de Klerk, the last leader of South Africa's apartheid era and a co-recipient of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela, has suffered dizziness and will be fitted with a pacemaker to help his heart function, a foundation said Tuesday.

A Cape Town-based foundation named after 77-year-old de Klerk said the former president felt dizzy after returning home on Sunday from a trip to Europe, and consulted his specialist on Monday.

"He has had several such spells in recent weeks and his specialist recommended the immediate installation of a pacemaker. He will be fitted with a pacemaker later today and will spend the night in hospital," the foundation said in a statement.

On Saturday, the foundation issued a statement on behalf of de Klerk and his wife Elita, saying they had decided to suspend a working visit and vacation in Europe because Mandela is critically ill, and that they were praying for an improvement in the health of the anti-apartheid leader.

Mandela, 94, was taken to a Pretoria hospital on June 8 to be treated for what the government said at the time was a recurring lung infection. Since then, there has been a groundswell of concern in South Africa and around the world for the man who spent 27 years as a prisoner under apartheid and then emerged to negotiate an end to white racist rule before becoming president in the country's first all-race elections in 1994.

De Klerk, a former education minister who had backed segregated schooling, was a key figure in a delicate transition that turned out to be relatively peaceful despite fears of widespread racial conflict. In 1990, a year after becoming South Africa's president, he announced he was legalizing the African National Congress, the banned group that led the anti-apartheid movement, and would free Mandela. He received the Nobel prize along with Mandela for his reformist initiatives and effectively negotiating himself out of power.

De Klerk later served as a deputy president during Mandela's single five-year term as president. Since his retirement from political life, he has traveled widely and delivered lectures. His foundation says its mission is to help poor and disabled children, contribute to conflict resolution and uphold South Africa's constitution, which robustly supports the protection of human rights.

Last year, Mandela's archivists and Google announced a project to digitally preserve a record of Mandela's life. In one online video, de Klerk recalled being asked to address parliament alongside Mandela in 2004. It was the 10th anniversary of the day Mandela became president. Mandela took de Klerk's arm as lawmakers applauded.

"It is, if you now look back, a symbol of how reconciliation can manifest itself," de Klerk said, reflecting on his encounter with Mandela.

New York Yankees and Alex Rodriguez Still Squabbling as Twitter Takes Sides

Back in 2007, Alex Rodriguez signed with the New York Yankees on a 10-year, $275 million contract. That same year, Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run, breaking Hank Aaron's all-time record, and most of us began to root for A-Rod to break it. Now, Rodriguez is slightly less popular as he and the Yankees are squabbling over something as minuscule as a tweet.

It all started on Tuesday, when this came up on Rodriguez's Twitter feed:

Nothing too volatile, right? Well, apparently not, because Brian Cashman was less than pleased when interviewed by Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York:

"You know what, when the Yankees want to announce something, [we will]," Cashman told ESPN New York. "Alex should just shut the f--- up. That's it. I'm going to call Alex now."

Yikes. It's been a tough year for Rodriguez, who has spent the whole season rehabbing from offseason hip surgery and dealing with more PED allegations. This incident may seem small superficially, but it sure appears to have been a breaking point for Cashman instead of an isolated incident.

Since then, Cashman has backed off a bit from his statement, admitting that he did overreact. Still, things are as icy as ever between the the two parties, and it only seems right to check the pulse of the Twitter-sphere for its take.

John O'Connell seems to think that things will not be getting much better, as evidenced by this reference to the Aaron Hernandez saga:

This New York sports fan, on the other hand, sees Cashman as the bad guy:

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, though, this situation may not even come to a head for awhile thanks to more injury concerns:

My take on the situation? While my respect for A-Rod has been on a steep decline for the past few years, I'm putting the blame squarely on Cashman. He may be frustrated with Rodriguez's antics, but was a tweet expressing excitement about rejoining the team a problem? No.

Who's in the wrong in this situation?

Who's in the wrong in this situation?

  • Brian Cashman

  • Alex Rodriguez

Any story regarding Rodriguez was bound to make headlines in the New York Post, but Cashman's rash outburst created an even bigger problem. With the Yankees 5.5 games out of first place in the AL East and 11-15 in the month of June, there are bigger problems for the General Manager to address. But now, Cashman looks immature in comparison to the much-maligned Rodriguez.
