Alternate publishing has been a quiet, behind-the-scenes subject for the last two or three years, but I keep hearing people talking about how they?ve taken the plunge. The terms vary: self-publishing, indie publishing, niche publishing. Some authors are apologetic; some are arrogant; some are business-like. But more and more, people are taking their copyright into their own hands and asking: how can I make money with what I have written. This week, we?ll look at seven stories of people who have done exactly that. For every story told here, I probably know of two or three more similar stories.

My latest book starts with a mouse-gnawed, bedraggled hat, and I found myself donning an old hat myself to get this book to readers who were asking for it.
More than ten years ago, I started a small press and self-published two picture books. One earned an award, both sold out their print runs, and I got a terrific crash-course in publishing ? enough to know I?d rather write. I stuffed my publishing hat into a closet.
After four traditionally published middle-grade novels, however, I dusted off my DIY cap. Having published THE FARWALKER?S QUEST and its sequel (which were contracted individually), Bloomsbury didn?t even want to consider the trilogy?s finale. Though the books earned good reviews and even a little award notice, sufficient copies didn?t sell for the company to invest in the third.
Farwalker?s Quest was a 2009 Cybil Award finalist and a 2010 Bank Street College ?Best Book?.

Yet readers were asking for more. So I finished it myself.
I did plenty of homework, including talking with others who were self-publishing to finish a traditional series. These included Book 6 in Kevin Emerson?s Oliver Nocturne series (Scholastic) and Book 4 in Chris Eboch?s Haunted series (Aladdin). (Chris has since self-published several books, though not that one yet, I think. Kevin?s series finale came out last May.)
One thing I did differently was to hire my Bloomsbury editor, partly because I wanted more third-party sanction (and more confidence in the work). I got lucky; her moonlit editorial notes came dirt cheap. Since I couldn?t afford the busy illustrator who did the first two covers, I paid a friend, Kirsten Carlson ? who?d previously helped with marketing materials ? to create the cover. For middle-graders, I wanted a physical book, so I used CreateSpace. (Next time, if there is one, I?ll look at Lightning Source for their distribution options, or the new Apple app.) I formatted the book and did my own ebook prep, too. The latter took the most effort.
Pulling my print-on-demand (POD) proof from the mail was as thrilling as getting an ARC from New York ? just with more proofing pressure! THE SKELETON?S KNIFE was published in November, and readers I?ve heard from so far have loved it. Yahoo!
My marketing plan is, frankly, minimal. I didn?t do this to sell lots of books, and I haven?t?about 100 copies in three months, though that?s still more than I expected. Really, I just wanted closure and something to offer fans who asked for more (without mailing them pages in a three-ring binder!).
That said, I did the same social media, blogger outreach, and announcements I would?ve done if someone else had published it, but at a lower volume, in part because my audience is mostly those who?ve read the first one or two, anyway. I?m pleased to have gotten a great review from a recognized kidlit blogger, Charlotte Taylor at Charlotte?s Library, as well as several on the book?s Amazon page. My attitude hasn?t changed, though ? I?d rather write. Yes, I know marketing is part of the writer?s job. After four traditionally published novels, however, with equal effort on my part and distinctly different sales results, I?m not convinced there?s much relationship between the author?s efforts and sales. (And none of my editors have thought so, either. Others, of course, disagree.)
I?m not planning to self-publish again soon. I think there are good reasons and bad reasons to do so, and I?m leery of the bad reasons. I still want the experts? imprimatur and thus the confidence that I?m not embarrassing myself before my peers and readers. I also want to spend maximum time writing (regardless of the results).
I?ll keep my worn publisher?s hat handy, though. Whether I like it or not, it probably won?t be another 10 years before I need it again!

Ought to B2B marketers alter their strategies throughout a recession? Does an economic depression always mean entrepreneurs have to work also harder to find ways to perform more with significantly less? Can a recession produce opportunity for smart entrepreneurs to grow and thrive? These are some of the topics I recently explored over a panel at the SMX Innovative conference in Dallas.
Are we in a decline?
First off, let me explain I do not think we?re in a recession in the US ? yet. A recession needs two quarters regarding negative growth in Gross domestic product, and Q4 last year observed 0.6% growth while preliminary numbers regarding Q1 this year were 2.9% growth (Bureau regarding Economic Statistics).
And we all may not yet take a recession, but occasions are growing progressively difficult for consumers. In fact, by 1985 companies that were ambitious recession advertisers became their revenue over 2.5X faster than those that reduced their advertising.
Seven strategies for B2B marketing throughout a slowdown
Given these types of macro economic trends, how should you allocate your own marketing budget : and time? This is my definitive guide to B2B marketing within a downturn:
1. Use lead management to maximise the value of each lead. In a recession, risk-adverse buyers take even longer than usual to research potential buys. When you first identify a new prospect (regardless of whether they will downloaded a whitepaper, halted by your booth in a tradeshow, or signed up for a free trial) they are in all likelihood still in the consciousness or research phase and are not yet ready to engage with one of your income reps. What this means is you need lead scoring to recognize which leads are very engaged, and guide nurturing to develop interactions with qualified prospects that aren?t yet ready to engage with sales. Without these types of capabilities, as many as 95% regarding qualified prospects who are not however sales-ready never end up turning into a sales chance. These prospects are usually valuable corporate assets that you worked challenging to acquire ? thus in a down overall economy you need to do everything possible to maximize value from their website. Implementing even a simple automated lead patient program can generate a 4-fold improvement within the conversion of qualified prospects into sales options over time. This is for large established organizations, but it means more youthful companies need to do more than ever before to reassure and build trust. Tactically, this means which includes customer references, evaluations, expert opinions, accolades, and other validation in the marketing. Strategically, a recession means fewer risk takers and visionaries, so have a lesson from Geoffrey Moore?s Traversing the Chasm and use strategies that appeal to well-known pragmatists: industry-specific marketing tactics along with solutions; vertical customer references; relevant close ties and alliances; and total product marketing.
Some. Align sales and marketing. Today?s prospective customers start their buying process by interacting with marketing and online channels well before they ever consult with a sales representative. This means companies must integrate internet marketing and sales efforts to create a single revenue direction. The old days of practical silos and poor interaction between the two sections must end. The tougher selling setting, driven by a a downturn, means this is more true than ever.
Seven. Don?t be a cost middle. Most executives nowadays think that Sales delivers revenue and Internet marketing is a cost center. Marketers are partially to blame for part of this way of thinking, since when we utilize metrics such as ?cost per lead? we frame the discussion in terms of fees, not in terms of effect on revenue. More discreetly, using language such as ?marketing spending? and ?marketing budget? instead of ?marketing investment? perpetuates these beliefs. In a recession, marketing requirements more than ever to change these kinds of perceptions. This means that marketing investments must be validated with a rigorous company case and should become amortized over the entire ?useful life? in the investment. And it means marketing must improve marketing accountability by simply demonstrating the influence of each marketing action on pipeline and also revenue. Of course, this can be easier said than done, but that will doesn?t mean you shouldn?t attempt. Even small methods, like reports that demonstrate the total opportunity price for each lead supply or campaign, can make a big impact.
Summary
Even if we aren?t in the recession, we are in for some tough monetary times ? as well as an economic slowdown implies a tendency to scale back internet marketing spending. However, research shows that a downturn creates opportunity to accelerate growth faster than the competition. Last week, California Congressman Darrell Issa convened a hearing in DC. The topic: Should the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare") require employers to pay for birth control? The panel: Five men representing various faith constituencies.
"The hearing is not about reproductive rights and contraception but instead about the Administration's actions as they relate to freedom of religion and conscience," said an explanatory letter issued by Issa's staff, but most women were not persuaded. Photos of this all-male panel immediately went viral and triggered a national awakening.
One week later the media should be hyping the 84th annual Oscars, but the atmosphere is uncharacteristically restrained. Instead of movie-pundit predictions and breathless articles from the fashion police, the web is filled with statistics.
For the past ten years I've been counting too, but this year people are actually asking me why. Coincidence? I don't think so. Congress chooses five men -- and only men -- to help determine access to birth control? AMPAS chooses five men -- and only men -- to compete for the accolade "Best Director"? Suddenly people are asking themselves: Where are the women?
Cameras flash in DC, light illuminates the darkness, and it's not just those five Best Director nominees who find themselves caught in the glare. The names of thirteen nominees appear in the Best Adapted Screenplay category, but only one is a woman, and she's nominated for a film ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") in which there are almost no female characters. The Best Original Screenplay category looks better (the nominees for "Bridesmaids" -- two names out of six candidates -- are female), but it doesn't take much digging to learn that many of the most infamous scenes in "Bridesmaids" were added by the (male) producer and the (male) director. So exactly who is being rewarded here?
And in the Best Picture category? Eight of the nine nominees for Best Picture tell their stories from all male points of view, with wives, mothers, daughters, girlfriends, and female colleagues all pushed to the edge of the drama. Only one of the Best Picture candidates, "The Help," has women in lead roles, and that film (although based on a book by a woman) was written and directed by a man.
But where are the women? Don't women hold up half the sky?
Of course they do! And when cameras snap the stars as they arrive on the Red Carpet tomorrow night, and when cameras pan the audience decorously applauding each new winner, lots of women will be there on our TV screens. Beautiful women in gorgeous gowns will adorn the arms of accomplished men, but they'll be seen and not heard -- like well-raised children in a proper Victorian family.
"Shouldn't the acting categories be collapsed already?" my male colleagues sometimes ask me. "Best Performance instead of Best Actor and Best Actress?" "Oh great," I reply. "Then there will be no women on stage at all!"
This isn't the time to drill down into the numbers, analyze them, and attempt a cure. Right now it's enough to simply acknowledge the current situation, and appreciate how unfair this all is in a world in which women do, indeed "hold up half the sky."
It's very hard to see what's not there. That's why radical Islamists force women to wear burqas. That's why Ultra-Orthodox Jews deface images of women on Jerusalem billboards. Since 9/11, complex female characters have virtually disappeared from multiplexes while Fundamentalist Christians have launched an all-out attack on reproductive rights that most Americans have taken for granted for decades. Coincidence? I don't think so.
Meanwhile, Oscar may look gold, but in fact he's really blue:

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? Fed up with mounting legal bills and rattled by intense scrutiny of her family and work, Sarah Palin was ready to step down as Alaska's governor months before she left office in July 2009.
Emails released Thursday, most from the last 10 months of her time in office, show she told her husband in April, "I can't take it anymore" and complained to spokeswoman Sharon Leighow and aide Kris Perry in March that she had been the target of "many frivolous suits and charges since the DAY I became VP candidate."
"I can't afford this job," she wrote.
The emails illustrate what Palin has said all along: After running for vice president unsuccessfully with John McCain, she returned to Alaska to find that the financial and emotional drain of her gubernatorial job was too much. She flirted with a presidential run last year, but told supporters she instead was dedicating herself to "God, family and country." She currently serves as a commentator on Fox News.
In a March 19, 2009, email, Palin complained that more than 150 freedom of information requests had cost the state more than $1 million, adding: "and who knows what all the bogus ethics charges have cost the state."
She expressed anger at having to pay for her own defense, with a bill that at that point totaled more than $500,000, and said her husband had to go back to work on the North Slope to help deal with the growing costs.
"We've all had to pay for our OWN legal defense in this political bloodsport ? it's horrendous ? why do you think Todd is on the slope today?" Palin wrote. "I am paying to defend in my capacity as GOVERNOR ? actions taken in my official position. This is unheard of anywhere else."
By the spring of 2009, the emails show, Palin was regularly butting heads with lawmakers of both parties over her absences from the Capitol.
"It's unacceptable, and there must be push back on their attempts to lame duck this administration," Palin wrote to her top aides on April 9.
Citizens and news organizations, including the AP, first requested Palin's emails in September 2008, as part of her vetting as the Republican vice presidential nominee. The state released a batch of the emails last June, a lag of nearly three years that was attributed to the sheer volume of the records and the flood of requests stemming from Palin's tenure.
The 24,199 pages of emails that were released last year ended in September 2008, as she was campaigning with GOP presidential nominee John McCain. Thursday's release includes 17,736 records, or 34,820 pages, generally spanning from October 2008 until Palin's resignation as Alaska governor, in July 2009.

The researchers discovered periodic increases in the amount of the isotope strontium-87 found in marine fossils. The timing of these increases corresponds to previously discovered low points in marine biodiversity that occur in the fossil record roughly every 60 million years. Adrian Melott, a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kansas and the study's lead author, thinks these periodic extinctions and the increased amounts Sr-87 are linked.
"Strontium-87 is produced by radioactive decay of another element, rubidium, which is common in igneous rocks in continental crust," Melott said. "So, when a lot of this type of rock erodes, a lot more Sr-87 is dumped into the ocean, and its fraction rises compared with another strontium isotope, Sr-86."
An uplifting of the continents, Melott explains, is the most likely explanation for this type of massive erosion event.
"Continental uplift increases erosion in several ways," he said. "First, it pushes the continental basement rocks containing rubidium up to where they are exposed to erosive forces. Uplift also creates highlands and mountains where glaciers and freeze-thaw cycles erode rock. The steep slopes cause faster water flow in streams and sheet-wash from rains, which strips off the soil and exposes bedrock. Uplift also elevates the deeper-seated igneous rocks where the Sr-87 is sequestered, permitting it to be exposed, eroded, and put into the ocean."
The massive continental uplift suggested by the strontium data would also reduce sea depth along the continental shelf where most sea animals live. That loss of habitat due to shallow water, Melott and collaborators say, could be the reason for the periodic mass extinctions and periodic decline in diversity found in the marine fossil record.
"What we're seeing could be evidence of a 'pulse of the earth' phenomenon," Melott said. "There are some theoretical works which suggest that convection of mantle plumes, rather like a lava lamp, should be coordinated in periodic waves." The result of this convection deep inside the earth could be a rhythmic throbbing?almost like a cartoon thumb smacked with a hammer?that pushes the continents up and down.
Melott's data suggest that such pulses likely affected the North American continent. The same phenomenon may have affected other continents as well, but more research would be needed to show that, he says.
